Abdullah Gul Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs The Republic of Turkey Balgat, 06100 Ankara, Turkey January 30, 2005 Dear Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul It was a great pleasure to meet with you during your trip to Washington last February. Thank you for taking time to discuss of some of the issues that are grave concerns of Uyghur people. We have learned that you are visiting the People's Republic of China on February 1, 2005. We, the Uyghurs in the United States, believe that the Chinese government will certainly ask once again your government's help to combat "separatism" in East Turkistan. As you aware, the Chinese government has been implementing brutal and repressive policies agaisnt the Uyghurs and the other Turkic people in East Turkistan. It is no secret that the Chinese government has been trying to permenantly annex the lands of East Turkistan, the land recognized as the craddle of Turkic civilization, by various means. It is severely curtailing the Uyghurs' right to practice Islam; it is enforcing inhuman birth control policy to reduce the population of Uyghurs and other Turkic people; it is trying to gradually phase out the usage of Uyghur language; it is flooding the Turkic lands with Chinese immigrants to permenantly change the demographic structure of East Turkistan. Faced with the danger of extermination, the Uyghur people are struggling for existance. It is a noble struggle of an ancient people against foreign occupation and oppression. It is a struggle for freedom and liberty. The Uyghurs have been counting on the moral support of the brotherly Turkish nation on this noble cause. In order to achieve its grand design of eliminating Turks from their ancient lands, the Chinese government used its political and economic power to secure the support of neighbors of East Turkistan in this evil campaign. It has succeeded in doing so in Central Asian Turkic states and Pakistan. It is not secret that the Chinese government has been trying hard to get the Turkish government on board. They believe that getting the support of the Turkish government is crucial to crush the spirit of the Uyghur nation. During your trip to China, it is certain that the Chinese government will ask for your government's "cooperation" on the Uyghur issue. Any possible concessions made by your government to China on this issue would be used by Chiese government as a propaganda tool to crush the morale of Uyghurs who have been defiantly resisting Chinese occupation in East Turkistan. It would provide comfort and justification for the despots in Central Asia, who have shamelessly endorsed the Chinese brutality against thier own brothers. The Uyghur people believe that China's recent attempts to manipulate the Turkic world is nothing new. We also believe that the warnings in the Bilge Kagan Orhun Inscriptions still apply in the 21st century. Bilge Kagan (716-734) warned the Turks with these words: "...The expressions of the Chinese are flowery and their gifts are pleasant... Their flowery words and pleasant gifts appeal to the peoples living far off...Thereafter they spread the seeds of intrigues... Able and good minded people are not allowed to do their work... Many Turkic tribes died when they were attracted by the flowery words and pleasant gifts of the Chinese...As the Chinese are very cunning, they induced the younger brother to rise against the elder...Turkic Kagans (rulers) came into conflict with their people... As a result, the lands of the Turkic peoples were subject to decay and the independent Turkic khanates perished...Although the Turkic peoples gave all their support to them, yet the Chinese emperors wanted
to exterminate the Turkic peoples and root them out... the Turkic
peoples wake up and return to yourself before it is too late..." |
